Tybee Island offers some of the most beautiful and diverse backdrops for photography along the Georgia coast. Beaches and Access Points

One of my favorite places to photograph on Tybee Island is North Beach. Compared to some of the island's busier beaches, North Beach often feels a little quieter and more relaxed, making it a wonderful location for family sessions, couples, and engagement photos.

The nearby parking area at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center makes meeting easy, and from there you have two convenient beach access points: Taylor Street and North Beach. Although they're only a short walk apart, each boardwalk offers its own unique character. One leads you through beautiful sea oats with a more natural, coastal feel, while the other provides a slightly different perspective closer to the lighthouse before opening onto the beach. Having both options within a few minutes of each other allows us to create a gallery with a surprising amount of variety.

Tybee Island also has the popular South End Beach, home to the island's iconic pier and pavilion. If you're looking for the classic Tybee beach experience, this is it. The wide sandy shoreline, rolling waves, and historic pier create a fun yet romantic backdrop that's especially beautiful during golden hour. On evenings with a colorful sunset, the sky often reflects across the wet sand, creating breathtaking portraits beneath and around the pier. Parking is conveniently located between 14th through 18th Streets, making the beach just a short walk away. Keep in mind that South Beach tends to be the busiest area on Tybee Island, particularly during weekends and the summer months, so planning your session later in the evening or on a weekday can provide a more relaxed experience.

If you're dreaming of a quieter, more intimate setting, Back River Beach is one of Tybee Island's hidden gems. Tucked away on the island's western side, this peaceful stretch of shoreline offers breathtaking sunset views over the Back River, calmer waters, and a more secluded atmosphere than the oceanfront beaches. It's an ideal location for couples looking for a romantic session or families wanting a relaxed experience away from the larger crowds. On many evenings, you might even spot dolphins swimming just offshore, adding a little extra magic to your session. Parking can be found at Back River Fishing Pier lot on Chatham Ave or on surrounding streets where there is metered parking. Spaces fill up quickly because the lot is small and popular with boaters.

Why Tybee Is So Beautiful

🌾 The sea oats are one of Tybee Island's most beautiful natural features, adding texture, movement, and a true coastal feel to your photographs. While they make a stunning backdrop, please help protect them by staying on designated paths and avoiding walking through the dunes. Their extensive root systems help stabilize the sand and play an important role in preventing beach erosion.

If you're planning a session between May and October, you may notice areas of the beach marked off with stakes and protective fencing. These are loggerhead sea turtle nests, carefully monitored until the hatchlings emerge. During nesting season, we'll always respect these protected areas and photograph around them—they're an important part of preserving Tybee's incredible natural environment. If your session extends into the evening, we'll also be mindful of Tybee's "Lights Out" efforts to protect nesting turtles and hatchlings. Bright lights can disorient both nesting females and baby turtles, so it's best to avoid unnecessary lighting on the beach after dark. 🐢

🌊 Tybee's shoreline has a natural, laid-back beauty that's distinctly Georgia. While the Atlantic here isn't known for crystal-clear blue water, the wide sandy beaches, rolling waves, sea breeze, and expansive skies create a timeless coastal backdrop. 🌅 There’s a reason photographers love chasing sunset at Tybee Island. As the sun begins to dip lower in the sky, the beach is bathed in warm golden light that's incredibly flattering for portraits. If your dream photos include golden light, colorful skies, and a romantic coastal glow, I typically recommend scheduling your session around sunset. No matter which you choose, we'll plan your session around the available light to create beautiful, timeless photographs.

Personally, I love sunset sessions for the incredible color and warm light, but if privacy is your top priority, sunrise is hard to beat. A Tybee sunrise photo shoot can be especially nice for families with young children who are happiest earlier in the day, while sunset is a favorite for its warm light and vibrant skies.

Tide Considerations

One of the things that makes every Tybee Island session unique is the tide. The beach can look completely different depending on whether the tide is high or low, so I always check the tide schedule when planning a session.

• High tide brings the water closer to the dunes and boardwalks, creating a more intimate coastal feel with waves crashing closer to shore.

Windy Days

One thing to keep in mind is that Tybee Island is almost always breezy—and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The movement in a dress, veil, or long hair can create beautiful, natural photographs. If your hair doesn't typically hold well in humidity or wind, you may want to consider an updo or bring a few extra bobby pins just in case. I also recommend safety pins in case your clothing decides it's going to blow in a direction that you didn't plan for.

This is also the perfect opportunity to bring along a wide-brimmed beach hat, a lightweight cover-up, or a flowing dress to embrace Tybee's relaxed coastal charm. Sometimes the wind adds just the right amount of movement to create some of the most memorable images of the session.

What to Wear

The right outfit can make a big difference in how your photos look and how comfortable you feel. Tybee Island has a relaxed coastal atmosphere, and clothing that complements the natural surroundings will help create timeless photographs.

👣 Barefoot or Shoes? Most beach sessions end up barefoot for at least part of the time! Walking barefoot through the sand creates a natural, carefree look that's perfect for the beach. If you'd rather wear shoes for part of the session, simple sandals or wedges are a great option—but keep in mind that high heels can be difficult to walk in on soft sand.

Choose Light, Comfortable Fabrics Tybee's coastal breeze pairs beautifully with lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, chiffon, and flowing dresses. Not only will these keep you more comfortable in Savannah's warm climate, but they also add beautiful movement and texture to your photographs.

🎨 Coordinate Your Colors Your outfits don't have to match—but they should complement one another. Choose colors that work well together rather than everyone wearing the exact same shade. Soft neutrals, creams, whites, tans, sage greens, dusty blues, and muted earth tones all photograph beautifully against Tybee's sandy beaches, sea oats, and ocean backdrop.

✨ Keep Patterns Simple Solid colors or subtle patterns tend to photograph best. If one person is wearing a pattern, try choosing coordinating solid colors for everyone else. This keeps the focus on your family and prevents outfits from competing with one another.

What to Bring

• Beach Bag - A beach bag is one of the easiest ways to keep your session organized. It's the perfect place to store your phone, keys, shoes, water bottle, and any other essentials. While some people don't mind setting their belongings in the sand, a bag makes it easy to move between locations and helps keep sand and water away from things like your phone's charging port.
• Hair Accessories Bring a few backup options like hair ties, bobby pins, clips, or a headband. As I mentioned earlier, Tybee is almost always breezy. Sometimes your original hairstyle just isn't cooperating, and having a few accessories on hand can save the day (and your photos!).
• Umbrella Rain showers are a normal part of life on the Georgia coast, and they're often brief. Bringing an umbrella is always a good idea. A clear umbrella or one that coordinates with your outfits can actually become a beautiful prop for photos. On sunny days, it can also provide a little extra shade while walking between locations.
• Towel A small towel comes in handy for more than just drying off after splashing in the water. It's great for wiping sandy feet, drying hands, dabbing away perspiration on warm days, or drying off little ones who can't resist running into the waves.
• Wide-Brimmed Hat A wide-brimmed beach hat isn't just stylish—it photographs beautifully. It adds personality, complements Tybee's relaxed coastal atmosphere, and can be a lifesaver if the wind has other plans for your hair.
• Water Especially during the warmer months, bring a bottle of water for everyone in your group. Staying hydrated helps everyone feel their best, and a quick drink between locations can make a big difference during a summer session.
• Snacks If you're bringing little ones, pack a few small, non-messy snacks as a backup. A quick snack break can work wonders if someone starts to lose steam toward the end of the session.
• Wagon If you're bringing young children, a wagon can be a lifesaver. Little ones may tire quickly, become overstimulated, or simply decide they've had enough walking. A wagon gives them a comfortable place to ride between locations and provides a convenient spot for blankets, snacks, drinks, and other essentials. Don't forget to pack a few favorite toys or comfort items, too. Bubbles are one of my favorite tricks—they're wonderful for capturing genuine smiles, encouraging little ones to look toward the camera, and creating playful, candid photographs that often become family favorites. A few small, non-messy snacks can also be a lifesaver if little tummies start rumbling during the session. Pro Tip: Schedule your session after a nap and a light meal whenever possible. Happy, well-rested kiddos almost always make for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Dogs

Tybee Island can be a beautiful place to include your four-legged family member in your photo session! Before planning your visit, be sure to check the current Tybee Island regulations regarding dogs, as leash rules and seasonal beach restrictions may apply.

To help your pup stay happy and comfortable, I recommend bringing:

• 💧 Plenty of fresh water and a portable bowl
• 🦴 A few favorite treats for rewards and encouragement
• 🎾 A favorite toy or squeaker to help grab their attention
• 🧻 Waste bags for easy cleanup

If possible, consider bringing a friend or family member along. They can hold the leash or take your dog for a walk after they've finished their starring role, allowing us to capture a few photos of just the two of you as well.

One factual note: Dogs are not allowed on Tybee's beaches from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, but they are allowed during the rest of the year as long as they're on a leash. Since rules can change, it's still a good idea to encourage readers to check the city's current regulations before their session.

If this is your first time in Tybee, make sure that you know what to expect for parking! During the busy season, parking can be tricky, so it is always a good idea to give yourself extra time to find a space. It is also generally $4.90 per hour until 8:00 p.m. You can easily pay on the Park TYB app.
